Abstract:

Describes the use of an ABABA single-case program that was devised to establish selected hand signs in a severely aphasic-limb-apraxic 71-yr-old male patient of 20 mo postonset. Focus of treatment was on teaching the S 20 hand signs, most of which were pantomimes, with some symbolic gestures. Although no change was observed on clinical tests of aphasia and limb apraxia, objective repeated measures showed that the program was successful in teaching a range of pantomimes and gestures and in improving facilitation of single-word and gestural responses.
