Abstract:

Vocabulary expansion is one common goal of intervention programs for individuals with mental retardation and communication impairments. A developmental phenomenon called "fast mapping," in which children acquire an initial understanding of a new word's meaning after only brief exposure to that word, may provide avenues for exploring processes in rapid vocabulary expansion. This paper describes experimental analysis of how fast mapping might facilitate multiple-learning in 10 participants with moderate/severe mental retardation.
